How does Omitac 20mg Capsule work?

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach which helps in relief of acid related indigestion and heartburn.

Side Effects of Omitac 20mg Capsule

Common side effects include nausea, stomach colic, paresthesia, dizziness, and headache, which are usually minor and temporary.

• It is a well-tolerated medicine and provides relief for a long time.
• Avoid eating late at night or before bedtime.
• Inform your doctor if you get watery diarrhea, fever or stomach pain that does not go away.
• Inform your doctor if you do not feel better after taking it for 14 days as you may be suffering from some other problem that needs attention.
• Long-term use of Ometac 20 can cause weak bones and a deficiency of minerals such as magnesium. Take adequate dietary intake of calcium and magnesium or their supplements as prescribed by your doctor.
• Do not stop taking medication without talking to your doctor.
• Consult your doctor right away if you develop decreased urination, edema (swelling due to fluid retention), lower back pain, nausea, fatigue, and rash or fever. These could be signs of a kidney problem.

Indication

• Omeprazole is used to treat conditions such as ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, including those caused by NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
• It is also used to manage gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), acid reflux disease over time, dyspepsia caused by stomach acid, and reflux esophagitis with ulcers.
• Omeprazole can be used to prevent acid aspiration during general anesthesia and in the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
• It is part of the regimen to eradicate Helicobacter pylori in peptic ulcer disease.

Pharmacology

• Omeprazole inhibits gastric acid secretion by blocking the hydrogen-potassium-adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase) enzyme system in gastric parietal cells.
• Its antisecretory effect begins within an hour, peaks in two hours, and can last up to 72 hours.
• Secretory activity gradually returns to normal within 3 to 5 days after discontinuation.

Dosage & Administration of Omitac 20mg Capsule

• Omeprazole is available in oral and intravenous forms.
• Dosage varies depending on the condition being treated, such as ulcers, GERD, or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
• For intravenous administration, it should be given slowly over a period of 2 to 5 minutes.
• Omeprazole should not be mixed or co-administered in the same infusion set with other drugs.

Interaction

• Omeprazole may interact with medications like diazepam, warfarin, and phenytoin, potentially requiring dosage adjustments.
• It does not appear to interact with theophylline, propranolol, or antacids.

Contraindications

Omeprazole is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Omeprazole is classified as pregnancy category C, but studies suggest it has no negative impact on pregnancy or the fetus/newborn.
• Its transit into breast milk and effects on the newborn are unknown.

Precautions & Warnings

• When stomach ulcers are suspected, the risk of gastric cancer should be ruled out before starting Omeprazole therapy.
• Store Omeprazole in a dry place, away from light and heat, and out of reach of children.
